City Offers Tips to Prevent Freezing Pipes and Water Meters

There are more vacant homes this winter than in many years because of the foreclosure crisis. So that means a greater risk of frozen pipes in empty houses. That’s according to Carrie Lewis, superintendent of the Milwaukee Water Works. 

She says owners of vacant homes can remove the risk by calling the city and asking for the water service to be turned off. Lewis says there’s also a risk of frozen pipes in occupied homes. She suggests residents take measures to make sure the air around their pipes and the water meter is warm.

U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez and state Sen. James Meeks took early steps to mount mayoral campaigns Sunday, even though they're unsure they'll try to succeed Mayor Richard Daley next year.

Supporters of the two well-known Chicago politicians gathered voter signatures that are due Nov. 22 for any candidate who wants to secure a spot on the ballot.

"It's already such a short window that if I do decide to run, I don't want to have to scurry to get the 12,500 signatures I'd need,'' said Meeks, who also is a pastor.

These bolts can sometimes be tricky to deal with. Many times these bolts are set with their tops lower than the elevation they are supposed to be set at. Or the top of the bolt can extend the base plate and not allow full thread for the nut. This can certainly make it difficult, but as you gain more experience you will become better at dealing with these types of bolts.
